A Family Remembrance
A Trick on Grandad by my Brother
Granddad
was a carpenter. He built a mobile home he, three other adults and two children
took behind their car to Arizona, USA, about 1949-50. He was always interested
in inventions.
All his life my brother was
always building inventions. In the early '50s one contraption was sitting by
the counter in the kitchen when Granddad was spotted coming for a visit.
Quickly brother told me, "Push these buttons and levers and tell Granddad
what they do. I will do the rest." Then he jumped into the cupboard and
closed the door.
"Wha'?" I was
about to say but no time. Granddad came in so I said, "Hi Granddad! Do you
know how my brother's invention works?" "No!" said Granddad
immediately interested, "How does it work?"
"Well," I said
dramatically and loudly for my brother to hear in the cupboard, "When I
push on this lever the drawer opens!" And THE DRAWER STARTED TO OPEN! Then
I pushed on the same lever and said, "And when I push back the same lever
the drawer closes!"
With eyes agog our Granddad saw the same
drawer start to close! On a roll I began, "When I move this lever the
cupboard door opens!" Indeed, the door flew open AND MY
BROTHER POPPED OUT!
I'd never seen dour Granddad
laugh so hard before or after!
